Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT / Embedded Computing Technology (ECT), is pleased to unveil a brand-new open-frame plug-in single-board computer module, named SDML-WLU, built under Intel® Smart Display Module – Large (Intel® SDM-L) architecture and powered by 8th Generation Intel® Core™ U-Series and Celeron® 4000 Series processors, for commercial visual display applications, such as digital signage, interactive kiosk, POS terminal, cloud terminal, bedside terminal, interactive whiteboard and smart mirror.

SDML-WLU has standardized mechanical and electrical specifications compliant with Intel® SDM-L and can be directly plugged into any Intel® SDM-L ready displays for media playback without additional connecting cables. Besides, the pluggable design makes SDML-WLU swappable for easy repair and upgrade without having to dismount the display. Compared to the counterparts based on Intel’s earlier Open Pluggable Specification (OPS), SDML-WLU features the open-frame design and has a thinner profile, making it easier to be integrated into the latest commercial integrated displays that desire sleek, unobtrusive minimalism.

Smooth 4K Video Playback
Powered by 8th Generation Intel® Core™ U-Series and Celeron® 4000 Series processors with integrated Intel® UHD Graphics as well as DisplayPort and HDMI signals support via the high-speed PCIe x8 edge connector, SDML-WLU has better video transcoding performance and can deliver smooth 4K Ultra HD content streaming at a frame rate of 60 frames per second without blurring, streaking or ghosting.

Flexible I/O Expansion For More Integration Possibility
Besides the defined I/O signals drawn through the edge connector to the SDM ready display and its peripheral connectors / devices, SDML-WLU incorporates as many connector ports as possible on the front I/O bracket to fulfill possible peripheral connection. They include two GbE LAN ports for higher network throughput and redundancy, four USB 3.1 ports for USB device connection, one Line-out jack to connect speakers, one Mic-in jack to connect a microphone, one S/PDIF optical port to output Dolby digital surround sound to a Dolby amplifier / receiver, and a Micro SD card cage for data logging, backup and storage. On the baseboard, it reserves a dual USB 2.0 pin header for I/O expansion flexibility. For example, integrators can provide two additional USB ports on the front panel in case they integrate SDML-WLU in a system, instead of externally plugging it into a system.

Securer Platform For Remote Management
SDML-WLU integrates a TPM 2.0 security chip on the board and partial models support Intel® vPro® platform with Intel® AMT (Active Management Technology). That not only enhances data encryption / restore operation against increasingly sophisticated attacks by cybercriminals, but also allows administrators to remotely manage / schedule all media contents and diagnose / repair devices via cloud.

Residential Applications Possible
Compliant with CE Class B and FCC Class B, SDML-WLU generates less radio emission to human health and less interference to digital devices. Thus, it can be integrated into not only business / commercial devices, but also into residential / domestic devices, such as patient bedside terminals.
