Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT / Embedded Computing Technology, launches two twin hybrid computing 3.5" single board computers, named 3.5"-SBC-RPL and 3.5"-SBC-RPH respectively, to help developers realize a compact edge system that requires excellent graphics, efficient computing, real-time processing and / or AI acceleration for a variety of applications, such as smart manufacturing, smart healthcare, smart retail and smart city.

Optimal Synergy Between Performance & Efficiency

3.5"-SBC-RPL and 3.5"-SBC-RPH are driven by 13th Gen Intel® Core™ U-Series and Intel® U-Series Processors (codenamed Raptor Lake U) based on the hybrid computing architecture consisting of performance cores and efficiency cores, which can intelligently manage and optimize workloads by allocating tasks to the appropriate cores. That is, the resource-intensive foreground tasks are allocated to the performance cores while the low-power background tasks are set to the efficiency cores. This new heterogeneous computing design can deliver better performance per watt. What is more, the boards allow system developers to adopt smaller or thinner thermal solutions to build a more compact system.

Two Video I/O Configurations For Flexibility & Multiple Display Applications

Both boards differentiate themselves from each other by their video I/O configurations on the rear I/O panel. 3.5"-SBC-RPL has two DisplayPort connectors while 3.5"-SBC-RPH is equipped with one DisplayPort connector and one HDMI connector, facilitating multiple display setups or offering flexibility across different types of displays without the need for an additional adapter or adapter cable respectively. With integrated Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics within the processor, it is able to deliver stunning visual details with up to 8K and 4K resolution at a frame rate of 60 frames per second via the DisplayPort connector and HDMI connector respectively.

Advanced Intelligence & Real-time Performance

Furthermore, the built-in Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics supports up to 96 execution units for highly parallel visual data processing to provide GPU acceleration for AI workloads. More AI acceleration features else, such as Intel® Deep Learning Boost and Intel® Gaussian & Neural Accelerator 3.0, are integrated in the processor and can equip 3.5"-SBC-RPL and 3.5"-SBC-RPH for cost-efficient and power-efficient AI computing power. Partial variants support Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) capabilities over Ethernet via two 2.5 GbE LAN ports on the rear I/O panel and can bring real-time responsiveness with an accuracy of up to 1 microsecond within the system and between systems over Ethernet. In addition, the boards incorporate other new-generation interfaces as well, such as two cutting-edge DDR5 SO-DIMM memory socket connectors with a high frequency of up to 5200 MHz, and four USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectors at SuperSpeed+ data transfer rate of up to 10 Gbps. All of the features above can achieve ultra-low latency within the systems and between the system and peripheral devices.

Greater Scalability In System Performance & Functionality

Besides three M.2 expansion slots with Key B, Key E and Key M physical interface forms respectively for SSD, WLAN, Bluetooth, WWAN and other possible expansion, 3.5"-SBC-RPL and 3.5"-SBC-RPH are still equipped with a board-to-board connector and allow system developers to stack a daughter board for the expansion of additional I/O ports or functions depending on the requirements and applications they address. Kontron offers a rich array of applicable off-the-shelf daughter boards, namely 3.5"-eIO Series, to help developers speed up the time from design to market launch and reduce their development costs. In addition, the boards support configurable TDP from 12 W to 28 W, which can provide flexibility to developer to design a system according to the cooling techniques they use and the use cases they implement.

More Rugged & Securer Against Application Conditions & Cyber Attacks

3.5"-SBC-RPL and 3.5"-SBC-RPH are provided in both commercial-grade and industrial-grade variants based on different processor configurations and operating temperature ranges. In addition to single-phase DC 12 V power input, the boards are available with the variants supporting wide-range voltage from DC 9 V to 36 V to accommodate to unstable power supply / random power surge or to support various voltage requirements in different applications. System developers can adopt a more reliable SSD as well to enhance shock and vibration resistance. In addition, a discrete TPM 2.0 security chip is integrated onboard, providing a securer hardware-based approach to manage user authentication, network access and data protection compared to the firmware TPM.
