Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT / Embedded Computing Technology (ECT), is thrilled to announce the mass production of 3.5"-SBC-EKL, a 3.5" single board computer powered by Intel® Atom® x6000E Series, Celeron® J6000 / N6000 Series and Pentium® J6000 / N6000 Series Processors (codenamed Elkhart Lake). It is offered now with four standard processor variants initially, including industrial grade Intel® Atom® x6212RE / x6425RE, embedded type Intel® Atom® x6211E and commercial grade Intel® Celeron® J6413. More variants are expected to be revealed at a later date. The board is designed to help system developers build a low-power compact IoT edge device to meet the demands of enhanced computing / graphics performance, real-time computing, hardened security and / or remote device manageability for industrial automation, retail, smart city, healthcare and other similar applications.

More Performance Enhancement in Computing, Graphics and AI Processing
Besides better CPU performance, 3.5"-SBC-EKL delivers up to twice graphics performance with up to 32 execution unit cores in comparison with the previous-generation counterparts. The improved GPU performance has more power to accelerate AI and computer vision tasks with reduced energy consumption. In addition, the board has two DisplayPort connectors on the rear panel and can support 4K UHD resolution at 60 frames per second.

Lower Latency over Multiple Network Hops
3.5"-SBC-EKL is equipped with several new-generation interfaces, such as two DDR4 SO-DIMM memory sockets with in-band ECC support, two 2.5 GbE LAN ports, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectors, one SATA 3.0, to support high data transfer rates between memory, storage and peripheral devices. Partial models support Intel® Time Coordinated Computing (TCC) technology as well as Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) protocol and can provide ultra-reliable low-latency Ethernet communication with an accuracy of up to 1 microsecond.

More Responsive to ARM® Based Edge IoT Devices
3.5"-SBC-EKL supports Intel® Programmable Services Engine (PSE) with a dedicated ARM® Cortex®-M7 based microcontroller integrated within the PCH. The microcontroller works independently of the other blocks and is routed directly to two CAN bus interfaces on the board. Thus, the interfaces support CAN FD (CAN with Flexible Data Rate) transmission with a speed of up to 5 Mb/s and can provide real-time and responsive communication with ARM® based edge IoT devices, such as sensors, actuators and controllers.

Greater Scalability in I/O Ports and Functionality
Besides three M.2 expansion slots with Key B, Key E and Key M physical interface forms respectively for SSD, WLAN, Bluetooth, WWAN and other possible expansion, 3.5"-SBC-EKL is still equipped with a board-to-board connector and allows system developers to stack a Kontron’s 3.5"-eIO Series daughter board on it for the expansion of additional I/O ports or functions according to the requirements and applications they address.

Higher Security against Malware and Sophisticated Cyberattacks
In addition to the integrated security features offered by the processor, such as Intel® Platform Trust Technology (Intel® PTT), Intel® AES New Instructions (Intel® AES-NI), Intel® SHA Extensions, Intel® Secure Key and Intel® Boot Guard, 3.5"-SBC-EKL integrates another TPM 2.0 security chip on the board and can provide a securer hardware-based approach to manage user authentication, network access and data protection.

Wider Operating Temperature Range Support for More Applications
In addition, 3.5”-SBC-EKL is offered with two ranges of operating temperatures depending on processor variants to fulfill different ambient temperature requirements addressing different application scenarios. The industrial-grade variants support an operating temperature range from -40 °C to 85 °C and the other variants support a temperature range from 0 °C to 60 °C.
